Slovakia and Vienna     Last Updated: 19-Jul-03

From Zakopane, Poland, we drove quickly through Slovakia, the smaller ex-conjoint twin of Czechslovakia. A brief stop for lunch at a lake, and then on to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

Pirogi, lasagne, pickles, horseradish

Like in Poland, we saw bad accidents, and accompanying traffic jams.

Bratislava, the capitol of a poor country, is still recovering from the Soviet era. They are slowly investing and building. The old town center has wonderful architecture, and much of the restoration is very art sensitive, ranging from old art to new, modern detail. We also had a fine dinner in the old town, including a very hot (as requested!) goulash. Scott's shirt is still stained from all the paprika they put in it. They also managed to work cheese into every other recipe.

Vienna, Austria

Roswitha's cousin Birgit (and her 2-year-old son Timo) were kind enough to let us spend the night with them at their Apartment in Vienna, which is just across the border (by normal routes, not necessarily ours) from Bratislava.

After staying up until 3 AM talking with Birgit, Roswitha rose early to apply for her Russian visa. While waiting for it to process, we went to lunch at restaurant Shabanack near Birgit's, where Timo demonstrated his eating and entertainment skills. Afterwards, we went off to the Russian embassy to wait in line for the visa. The next stop was the Styrian embassy, and then we headed South to Kindberg and Graz. We'd like to thank Birgit and Timo for their hospitality and patience.

On the way to Graz, we stopped in to see Roswitha's aunt Helga and uncle Rudi Teubenbacher (Birgit's parents) in the small town of Kindberg. Since retiring, they have been continuously improving and remodelling their house, making it a stylish Teubenbacher Schloss. We wanted to see the latest improvements on their never-ending project. They also treated us to a wonderful Styrian snack, from which we could barely waddle away. Danke!

Yummy! But, it's just a little snack...
